"Truth" picks up "Idol" baton for strong debut by www.REUTERS.com

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - It's no lie: The premiere of "Moment of Truth" was a hit.

The new Fox reality series successfully took the hand-off Wednesday night from "American Idol" and delivered the highest retention in the adults 18-49 demographic of any show leading out of the musical competition.

"Truth" averaged 23.2 million and a 10.2 rating/24 share in the 18-49 demo, according to preliminary estimates released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research. Its 94 percent retention among viewers 18-49 was the highest for any program coming out of "Idol"; it retained 87 percent of "Idol's" viewership and actually gained over that show in 18-34 and teens. "Truth" stands as the highest-rated premiere so far this season.

Meanwhile, "Idol" (26.8 million, 10.8/28) dominated the 8 p.m. hour; only NBC's "Deal or No Deal" (13.8 million, 3.7/10) could muster any ratings against it. Against "Truth," only CBS' "Criminal Minds" (12.9 million, 3.2/8) was somewhat successful.

CBS' "CSI: NY" (11.7 million, 3.3/9) beat both NBC's "Law & Order" (10.3 million, 3.0/8) and ABC's "Cashmere Mafia" (5.6 million, 2.0/5), all at 10 p.m.

Fox (25 million, 10.5/26) led the networks in all categories.
